Genre Influence

In this shot we see what the audience and Lila presumes to be Norman's mother from a POV (point of view) shot from Lila. The foreground of the shot is dominated by an bright over exposed light-bulb. The mother is seated in a chair and centred in the background of the shot. She is strongly lit and is casting a shadow behind her. Also in the background are various items such as barrels of fruit, cartons etc. Showing the audience this is a fruit cellar. At the same time we hear a minor key/low tone note being played by a stringed instrument. This transitions to a slightly higher notes which is accompanied by more strings creating a feeling of suspense. The diegetic sounds of the door opening and Lila's footsteps can also be heard. As the scene continues we also hear Lila say "Mrs Bates" further convincing the audience to this women being Norma Bates (Norman's mother). The combinations of these visuals and verbal...

We see a wide angle shot of the inside of Norman's house. We can see Lila behind the fruit cellars stair's handrail while looking towards Norman located in the background, who has just entered and is standing in front of the door. In front of Norman is the stairs to the second floor. Norman is looking for Lila in this shot and can't seem to see her. Also in the background is the outside light coming through the shades. This is the only significantly bright thing in this shot, as the rest of it is almost covered by shadows. The camera is relevance to Norman is from a low point of view shot, but at Lila’s head level. Here we hear a combination of minor key and Low tone strings playing a fast paced piece. This music creates a suspenseful feeling. The diegetic sounds of the door closing and Norman's footsteps as he heads up the stairs followed by the sound of a door opening and closing in the distance can be heard. In this shot we see a medium close up of Sam grabbing Norman, who is dressed as his mother, from behind. We see Norman struggling and screaming while holding a knife. Sam is grabbing Norman's arm to prevent him from swinging the knife, he has a agonising look on his face. In the background various items from the fruit cellar are located. We can see directly behind them the cellar's door, which is open due to Lila walking in prior to this shot. We hear a constant high pitch major key screeching of stringed instruments. This music is also used in a previous scene with a similar action taking place, in which we're meant to feel suspense. The music created is repeated in quick succession which transitions to the music in this exact shot which is a minor key and slower paced sound of the same stringed instruments.
